As human beings, we are all susceptible to doubt and uncertainty at some point in our lives.
This is particularly true regarding matters of faith, where questions about God and the purpose of your existence can confuse you. For many Christians, doubt can be incredibly challenging, as it can feel like a betrayal of their faith.
Over the years, I've struggled with my faith occasionally. I question the existence of God, the authenticity of the Bible, and the purpose of my own life. This doubt can sometimes be overwhelming, but it also forces me to explore my beliefs and develop a deeper understanding of myself and my spirituality.
John 20:24-29 - Thomas
The Bible contains many examples of people who struggled with doubt, including some of the most prominent figures in Christianity. One of the most famous doubters in the Bible is Thomas, one of Jesus' disciples. In John 20:24-29, Thomas doubts Jesus's resurrection, saying he will not believe it unless he sees the wounds in Jesus's hands and side for himself. When Jesus appears and invites him to touch his wounds, Thomas responds with a confession of faith, saying, "My Lord and my God!"
1 Kings 19:1-18 - Elijah
Another example of a doubting believer is Prophet Elijah. In (1 Kings 19:1-18), Elijah becomes overwhelmed by fear and uncertainty after facing opposition from the prophets of the false God. He retreats to a cave and mourns to God that he is the only faithful prophet in the land. However, God reassures Elijah that he is not alone and provides a vision that strengthens his faith and renews his purpose.
In another instance, a man came to Jesus, asking him to heal his son. The man believed that Jesus could heal his son but still expressed doubt, saying
"I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!" (Mark 9:24). This man's honest admission of doubt did not prevent Jesus from healing his son but demonstrated the power of faith despite doubt.
James 1:5-6 - James
Similarly, James acknowledges the struggle with doubt in his letter to the early Christian community. He writes "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed." (James 1:5-6).
James does not deny the reality of doubt but encourages believers to lean on their faith in moments of uncertainty.
Romans 14:4 - Paul
Doubt can also be a catalyst for spiritual growth. Paul advises the early Christians not to argue with one another about faith matters but instead focus on their faith journeys. He writes "Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand. " (Romans 14:4).
This verse reminds us that our faith is a personal journey, and doubt can be a tool to help us explore and develop our own beliefs.
2 Corinthians 12:9-10
Moreover, doubt can strengthen our faith. As Paul writes in (2 Corinthians 12:9-10), "But God said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me for when I am weak, then I am strong." This is a reminder that God's strength is made perfect in our weakness and can help us trust in God's plan even when uncertain.
James 5:16 - James
As a doubting believer, it can be tempting to keep these doubts to yourselves. However, sharing your struggles with other believers can help to provide support and foster deeper relationships. In (James 5:16), James writes,
"Therefore, confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective."
Opening up about your doubts to your peers can not only provide you with comfort and support, but it can also help you to hear other perspectives.
As a believer you must recognize that doubt is a natural part of the faith journey. However, you should not let your doubts prevent you from seeking a deeper relationship with God and serving his will. In fact, doubt can lead you to a stronger faith and deeper understanding of yourselves and your beliefs. As you continue to explore your doubts and questions, ensure you lean on the wisdom and support of the Bible and fellow believers.
