What The Bible Says About Peace

In the bible, peace is not just the absence of conflict but a profound sense of well-being that transcends understanding—a gift from God Himself.

The scriptures outline peace (Shalom in Hebrew) as completeness, wholeness, and harmony. This peace, deeply rooted in a relationship with God, is vividly portrayed through the lives and teachings of biblical figures.

Jesus, The Prince Of Peace

Known as the Prince of Peace, Jesus exemplifies the peace that surpasses all understanding. In Isaiah 9:6, He is prophesied to bring a kingdom with endless peace. This is not merely a ceasefire between conflicts but a restoration of order, reflecting God's original intention for creation. In the Gospel of John, Jesus imparts this divine peace to His followers, distinguishing it from the transient peace the world offers: Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. (John 14:27 NIV)

This passage reassures us that amidst life's turmoil, the peace Jesus gives is enduring and stabilizing.

Paul's Teaching On Peace

The Apostle Paul deeply understood the anxieties of life but taught that peace could be accessed through communion with God. In his letter to the Philippians, he outlines a formula for maintaining peace: prayer, supplication, and thanksgiving. This approach channels our focus away from our worries and towards God's sovereignty and love: Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7 NIV)

Paul assures that this peace is not merely emotional calm but a protective force for our innermost thoughts and feelings.

The Peacemakers

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus blesses the peacemakers, highlighting their identity as God’s children. This beatitude encourages believers to actively foster reconciliation and unity, reflecting God’s peaceful nature in a world of discord:
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. (Matthew 5:9 NIV) Being a peacemaker involves more than avoiding conflict; it requires active involvement in mending relationships and promoting understanding among individuals.

Bible Verses On Peace

  • John 16:33I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. (John 16:33 NIV) This verse provides assurance that Christ has overcome the world's chaos, thus offering us peace in the midst of it.
  • Isaiah 26:3You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you. (Isaiah 26:3 NIV) Trust in God is directly linked to peace, emphasizing that a steadfast mind focused on God is kept in perfect peace.
  • Romans 12:18If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. (Romans 12:18 NIV) This instruction challenges us to strive for peace with all people, recognizing that peace depends on our efforts to live harmoniously.
  • Philippians 4:7: And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:7 NIV) The peace of God acts as a guardian over our hearts and minds, protecting us from the anxieties that life can bring.

The biblical view of peace is multi-dimensional, impacting every aspect of our lives. It arises from trusting God, aligning with His teachings, and the reconciliation offered through Jesus Christ. This peace is both a personal experience and a communal obligation, prompting us to pursue and promote peace in our interactions. Ultimately, the bible shows that true peace is found not in external circumstances but in a restored relationship with God, extending to our relationships with others and within ourselves.
