Getting out of a spiritual rut

Getting into a spiritual rut doesn't take much effort. You often slide into it without knowing, only to discover that you're already in the middle of it.

At some point in our lives, we experience weariness in our spiritual journey with God. All the excitement and delight you have in your walk with God gradually fade. It then seems as if your spiritual life has stagnated or even come to a halt. At times, this could result from doing the same thing repeatedly, long enough, till it doesn't interest you any longer.

Discovering that you're in a spiritual rut is one thing and getting out of it is another. However, you must be patient with yourself as it takes some time to get out of a spiritual rut. I'll share suggestive ways to get out of a spiritual rut in this article. But before we do that, we would like to highlight a few signs indicating you may likely be in a rut.

Possible Signs That Indicate You May Be in a Spiritual Rut

  • Spiritual tiredness - You don't feel motivated to do any spiritual exercise
  • Going to church and getting involved in activities doesn't excite you anymore.
  • When the things you once despised as a believer begins to appeal to you again.
  • When you start becoming less sensitive to the convictions of the Holy Spirit.
  • When there is little or no testimony of what God is presently doing in your life, all your testimony is in the past.
  • When you begin to sense that you now have less resistance to sin.

Suggestive Ways to Get Out of Spiritual Rut

Listen to Worship Songs

Spirited songs have a way of getting into your subconscious without your permission. Make out time to listen to them for a long time. Once it gets in, it can change the dynamics of your heart and thus help you get out of spiritual redundancy. Memories of how God has shown you mercy and his faithfulness in the past can come up in your mind; reflect on them.

Change the Way You Do Things

Changing your routine can break you free from spiritual rut. Mark Batterson says, "Change of pace plus change of space equals change of perspective." If you have been reading a particular version of the bible, try a different version. You can also try an audio bible. Try praying aloud while you exercise or do chores.

Talk to Someone About Your Spiritual State

The scripture says, "Confess therefore your sins one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed" James 5:16. However, ensure the person you'll talk to is someone that loves the Lord and has a proven track record of their walk with God. Open up to them about how you're feeling. A problem shared is halved solved.

Get an Accountability Partner

In your conscious effort to get out of a spiritual rut, you will need an accountability partner whose work is to put you on your toes and ensure you're committed to rediscovering your spiritual vibrancy.

Engage in Prayer & Fasting (Skip A Meal)

Jesus responds to His disciples in Matthew 17:21 told them, " That kind of spirit comes out only if you use prayer and fasting". Certain situations in our lives warrant prayer and fasting, and a spiritual rut is one of them. The essence of fasting is to keep the noisiness of the flesh subdued. By doing so, you're letting your spirit come alive and get more in tune with God.

I pray that as you take steps to come out of your spiritual rut, God will show you mercy and help you regain your spiritual fervency in Jesus name. Amen.
